The smartification of the grids is making progress: 450connect with its radio network, which offers nationwide fail-safe voice and data communication with outstanding area and building coverage without discrimination for all companies in the critical infrastructures, has completed successfully further user tests with its co-shareholder E.ON and its subsidiaries.

As part of the smartification of its grids E.ON has identified a number of systems and applications that are to be connected to the crisis-proof 450 MHz communication and has selected them for the corresponding use cases smart meter gateways and digital local network stations, DigiONS for short. In February, the first digital E.ON network station was connected via the 450 MHz radio network. This year, E.ON plans to install a total of around 5,000 new digital local network stations and equip each of these stations with a fail-safe stations 450 MHz communication in order to be able to react quickly to major power outages and guarantee secure grid operation even in the event of major power outages.

At the same time, around 150 smart meter gateways (SMGWs) were successfully rolled out in the area of the Westenergie company. . The next 150 SMGWs are currently being rolled out at all other E.ON regional companies such as E.DIS. You can read more about this here.

Smart metering applications such as intelligent metering systems (iMSys) are often located in basements or other places that are comparatively difficult to access. Due to the wavelength of the 450 MHz frequency means that particularly good building penetration and comprehensive coverage of electricity, gas, water and district heating meters is possible. In addition, 450connect also offers high system availability as well as prioritisation options for critical switching commands between aEMT and CLS devices in order to cope with the increasing number of generation plants in the distribution grid and to reliably control the reliably regulate power consumption at the grid connection via controllable consumers.

The growing number of controllable consumers for which the 450 MHz platform offers customised solutions also includes heat pumps and wall boxes. Smart city applications such as digital public lighting will also benefit in the future.

For Alexander Montebauer, Chairman of the Executive Board of E.DIS AG and Deputy Chairman of the Supervisory Board of 450connect, the 450 MHz network is important both for connection of its own technology as well as for reading meters. “The introduction of the 450 MHz network is an important milestone for us in order to optimise communication in the energy sector under the constantly growing requirements such as eMobility or the connection of numerous renewable energy systems in a crisis-proof manner, to improve and drive digitalisation forward. We are convinced that this technology will help us to successfully master the challenges of the energy transition. 450connect Managing Director Frederik Giessing is also delighted with the test results: “The successful E.ON suitability tests once again demonstrate the importance of the 450 MHz radio network for operators of critical infrastructures. It will make a decisive contribution to the digitalisation of critical infrastructures and their resilience and thus to crisis-proof public services in Germany.”
