ESB Networks (part of the ESB Group) has been awarded 4 MHz in the 410 MHz band (410-414 and 420-424 MHz) for the digitalization of their smart grid network, the transmission and distribution networks throughout Ireland. The regulator ComReg highlighted in the decision that the utility industry is facing growing challenges due to the change to low carb industry and increasing climate change risks and that a highly secure and reliable communication network is a key element to tackling these challenges.  The license has been granted for 15 years.

ESB is a leading Irish utility focused on providing excellent customer service. They have a regulated asset base of approximately €9 billion with 43% of electricity generation capacity in the all-island market. They currently supply electricity to approximately 1.4 million customers throughout the island of Ireland. ESB Group employs approximately 7,000 people.

450 MHz Alliance, as a long-standing supporter of 410-430 MHz spectrum usage worldwide, welcomes ComReg’s decision gladly.
